Direct Light from a Young Giant

Astronomical evidence

HIP 65426 b is a young giant observed at a wide separation from its host star. JWST detected its light across near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. Suppressing the star’s glare allows instruments to separate a faint companion signal from the much brighter stellar source. A young giant can remain warm from its formation and emit infrared radiation. That emission makes direct imaging possible even when reflected visible starlight is weak. The published images establish planetary light at the companion’s location; they do not resolve the cloud bands illustrated here. Mass and radius estimates depend on atmosphere and evolution models and on assumptions about the system’s age. The local snapshot retains the discovery-era estimates with their uncertainties, while the cited JWST study provides a separate spectral analysis. The catalog supplies no orbital period; an unknown period is not zero.

The illustrated viewpoint

The nearby observatory and broad ember-colored disk are fictional. The very small stellar point expresses a wide-orbit setting, but the artwork is neither an infrared detector image nor a calibrated visible-light view.
